Happy New Year! Gizmo is playing the role of “Baby New Year” in the swing! He really likes it in there. Unfortunately, he’s going to get booted from the baby things soon for our HUMAN baby.
Last year was filled with excitement, up until the end. I migrated the blog from using Flickr to self-hosting images in the Urban Pug Picture Gallery (which anyone can upload pictures to). Then, I created Urban Pug TV, which shows all the cutest / funniest Pug videos from YouTube. Also, of course, Tricia became pregnant along the way! However, relating back to Pugs, we had some excitement just yesterday!
Yesterday, we had to take Gadget to the vet for a rather embarrassing problem. The day before yesterday, the tissue around his butt became inflamed — and started oozing a thick fluid mixed with some blood! I suspected it might be a problem with his anal glands, so I called Tricia’s parents (who know more about pug physiology than I do) and they confirmed that 1) it was probably a problem w/ his anal glands and 2) he probably needed to see the vet.
So, we got him into the vet yesterday, and they basically confirmed the diagnosis. To treat him, they gave him a quick sedative, flushed out his glands, and then gave him another shot to wake him up. He was out for about 10 minutes. They also gave us some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to give him to prevent infection and reduce the swelling. He’s feeling better now, and he’ll hopefully be 100% back to normal by tomorrow.
“Why did this happen?” we asked the vet. Neither Gizmo nor Gadget have ever had their anal glands expressed, and neither has ever had a problem like this before. We were told that some dogs do not excrete all the fluid they produce in their anal glands and that over time the fluid can “back up” and cause problems. Second, sometimes the gland can get “blocked” and get backed up. This is what probably happened to Gadget. We probably don’t need to regularly express his glands, and this is probably (hopefully) a one-time occurrence.
Anyway, hopefully he’ll be 100% back to normal soon (he was already feeling well enough to beg *really well* for some New Year’s Day Bacon)

This is a Baby Bjorn. It’s a device that you strap onto yourself to carry a baby around the house with you.
It turns out that you can also use it for carrying Pugs around the house.
You know how with some dogs, when you put clothes on them, you can just tell that they don’t like it? Well, this is absolutely not the case with Gizmo and the Baby Bjorn. He is extremely content in there, and eventually he will fall asleep.
He’ll either do that or be very awake and start to forget he’s strapped to me. For example, yesterday I was standing in the kitchen with him and he realized that there was a new window he could see out of — he kept staring out of the window and he’d bark at the cars he is suddenly “tall” enough to see.

This is just a quick update, as I’m still busy studying. (I have a Business Enterprises final tomorrow and Intellectual Property the next day) Anyway, I was browsing the forums this morning and noticed this picture of Mischa, who is an Albino Pug. Albinism is a condition where the body has a limited ability to produce skin / hair pigmentation. I’ve never seen an Albino Pug before. She sure is cute!
I resonantly relocated to the U.K. My Pug, Azreal, in Florida , who is staying with family, has her chip, all her documentation, blood work, bags packed and is ready to come! Now that it’s time I’ve been having some MAJOR problems finding an airline that will fly Pugs in general because of there snout-noses. Through out this whole process I’ve stayed in close contact with her Vet. who is over looking her move and I’m shocked he never mentioned there was a greater health risk with pug then with other dogs. The more research I do I’m coming to see I have to find a way to get her in the cabin of the plane but I can’t find any airlines that will do this (especially considering it’s international).
So far the closest I’ve come is Continental Airlines(were she’ll be in the cargo hold were she isn’t even allowed a blanket). When moving here I knew flying her over was going to be hard but i didn’t know her breed was at a higher health risk on planes and to be honest would never made the move in the first place if I had thought she couldn’t with us. If anyone has any advise I’d really be greatfull!Should I geta Pet travel Agent? Could they find her a more “pet friendly” flight? I’ve never traveled on a plane with her and ANY tips would be so helpful. I don’t want to put her in harms way but England won’t feel like home until she’s here!
Does anyone have any suggestions? My best guess would be to find the most “pet friendly” international airline and use them. If they won’t let you put the pug in the cargo hold, then wouldn’t one option be flying from England to the US (pickup the pug), then fly back with pug in the cabin?
I searched for “international dog transport” on Google and some companies came up — maybe one of them is good?
If anyone has any information about this topic, please share!

We recently painted the “extra” room in our house pink, because we’re getting it ready to be a nursery. During the process, Gizmo got ahold of the paint and a brush, and had some fun. He decided to “tag” the wall with an appropriate phrase.
P.S. – We call Gizmo, “Momo” for short (we also use “mo” and Tricia sometimes uses “Gizzy” or “Gizzykins”). For Gadget, we use “Gadg” and “G.” Oh and we totally imagine them as characters. I was thinking about starting a cooking blog (I like to cook) and I can’t help but think of Gadget as a chef, with the white jacket and tall white chef’s hat.

I have a friend who works at Google, and he got me interested in the YouTube developer API, which lets programmers query YouTube for videos. So… I made Urban Pug TV.
You can now get all the YouTube Pug Videos right here! It’s still “beta” (which means that I don’t know what I’m doing and it might break) but it does work to let you see some cute / funny videos!
Anyway, test it out and tell me what you think (and tell other people, too!)
Today was the second annual Pug-O-Ween Party hosted by the New Orleans Pug Meetup Group. We had a GREAT turnout, with LOTS of pugs coming in costume! There was a really wide variety of costumes — space pugs, rabbits, spider-pugs, devil-pugs, vam-pugs… I can’t begin to list all the costumes. So, take a look at the pictures, and I’m putting the vids I took on YouTube — I’ll post links to them when they’re up!
“My husband and I will be adding another pug to our family in about 2-weeks. We have a 4yr old female named Yoshi. We are going to be adding a male. We would appreciate any advice that people have on integrating the new puppy. Our Yoshi is the love of our lives and we have spoiled her. We are excited about the puppy, but worried about her adjustment.”
If you have any advice, please go over to the forums and help out!

Recently, 88 dogs were rescued in St. Tammany Parish (north of New Orleans)
They were found in deplorable conditions, and some of them were Pugs. Cruelty charges were filed against the owner.
Now, they’re available for adoption. Anyone wishing to adopt or make a donation to help care for the dogs can call the St. Tammany Humane Society at 985-892-7387.

Gizmo loves corners. He always positions himself in places where his back is completely to the wall. He sits in the bathroom all the way to the corner, halfway underneath the shower curtain. He sits in the den all the way against the door, away from everyone (when he’s not sitting in Gadget’s chair). He sits underneath my desk in the corner between the back of the desk and the computer cables. He sits in our *other* bathroom in the corner between the sink and the wall.
Gizmo loves corners. He just keeps going there. I dont know why, exactly. Do you know why? Why does he love sitting in corners! TELL ME!!!
